Sources tell THR that producer Christopher Nolan and director Zack Snyder are zeroing in on Viggo Mortensen to play the villain General Zod in their Superman: Man of Steel film. Last month Henry Cavill was cast as Superman/Clark Kent, now Nolan and Snyder are working on filling out the rest of the cast.
No talks or negotiations have yet begun with Mortensen, the real news at this point is just that the duo like him. This is similar to last weeks revelation that Kevin Costner may be up for the role of Jonathan Kent in the Superman reboot due in theaters in December 2012. Also similar to the report a couple weeks ago that a slew of actresses were in the running for another major role.
The evil scientist General Zod, also hails from Superman’s home world of Krypton, and betrayed Superman’s father. Zod appeared in the 1978 Superman and 1980′ Superman II, he was played by the terrific Terrence Stamp. Mortensen’s a great actor and could definitely fill Stamp’s shoes quite nicely.
Mortensen is still in negotiations to appear in Universal’s Snow White and the Huntsman, so that could get in the way, but let’s hope not.
