A few days ago Tony Scott confirmed with Speakeasy that if there is a Top Gun 2, which is looking more likely everyday, he will indeed direct it. Scott also gave Speakeasy some clues as to what the sequel to the 1986 film that made both Tom Cruise and Scott highly sought after commodities will entail,
“It’s not a reboot, it’s not a reinvention, it’s not a remake,” Scott insisted. “The world of ‘Top Gun’ today is very different. It’s really computer geeks sitting in Nevada playing war games. It’s the end of an era for fighter pilots, but those fighter pilots then become test pilots, and the planes now that they go to fight are drones, but while they’re perfecting [the drones], they fly them.”
As for Cruise’s role, rumors have been flying around that he would have a mere supporting role, slightly more than a cameo. But Top Gun 2 screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) dropped Vulture an email informing them that, “There is no Top Gun 2 in which Maverick is not the starring role.”
Looks like that Tom Cruise cameo in Tropic Thunder is really starting to pay off. Cruise can be my “wingman” anyday.
