According to BBC News, Ben Whishaw has been cast as as the MI6 gadget guru Q in Skyfall, the latest installment in the ever persistent James Bond franchise. Q has been missing from the franchise since Pierce Brosnan’s last outing as 007 in Die Another Day. The britich actor is probably best know for his role in the British television series The Hour.

As a reminder, Q is the man who supplies bond with all his gadgets and has absolutely no respect for Bond or his recklessness. The first Q was played by Desmond Llewelyn for an amazing 36 years and 17 James Bond films between the years 1963 and 1999. His first appearance was in the second Bond film, From Russia with Love. After Llewelyn passed away in 1999, John Cleese stepped into the techies shoes for one outing in 2002’s Die Another Day.

Ben Whishaw joins Daniel Craig who is retuning as 007 for the third time. The two already worked together back in the 2004 in the British gangster film Layer Cake, which has got to be one of Craig’s best performances.

Wishaw casting is on the heels of the announcement that the great Albert Finney will also be joining the film directed by Sam Mendes. The film also stars Helen McCrory Javier Bardem, Ralph Fiennes and Judi Dench. James Bond in Skyfall hits theaters on Nov. 9 2012.
