It looks like the long in-development Logan’s Run remake is getting some new legs. According to Heat Vision, Warner Bros. and producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman have grabbed Nicolas Winding Refn to direct the sci-fi remake with Ryan Gosling, who just closed a deal to star. Refn is stepping in after the Logan’s Run lost its previous director, Carl Rinsch, due to scheduling conflicts. Refn directed Gosling in Drive, which is still in post-production but it’s already getting a lot positive buzz. And it seems Warner Bros. is excited to get the two back together again.

The original Logan’s Run from 1976 starred Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett and was pretty good, in one of those weird, I don’t know what I’m watching ways. As for the stroy, Logan’s Run is set in the year 2274, after an ecological disaster has driven civilization to the protection of domed cities. The story revolves around a society that holds a ceremonial death ritual for all citizens who reach the age of 30, their method of population control. Logan (York) is a “sandmand” charged with the enjoyable task of tracking down citizens who refuse to die peacefully, “runners”. But when Logan’s time comes up, he decides to run.

Alex Garland (28 Days Later…) has written the script, which is said to be closer to the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan than the 1976 film. Refn’s Drive hits theaters September 16, 2011.
