`Killzone 3′ to be in 3D

Gamespot is reporting that the sequel to Sony’s well received Killzone 2, developed by Guerrilla Games will be released in 3D. Sony is planning to update all PS3s to support stereoscopic 3D later this year with a firmware update.

This is especially significant since the second title in the Killzone franchise saw great success, this may be the first hit game to go 3D. 3D gaming, much like movies until recently, has been gimmicky or without purpose. Avatar, though it does not deserve ALL the credit, was able to show how 3D can be used in film to make for a superior viewing experience. Could Killzone 3 do the same for video games?

The major concern I see here is the same issue we are seeing with movies today. A few games might use this new technology to do really great things and enhance our gaming, but will a storm of poorly made garbage cash-ins follow? Well to answer that we need to know if 3D games are going to cost more than 2D games. With an entry price of $60 for a new game on PS3s and Xbox 360s, I have to ask WHO IN THE HELL is willing to pay more than that?

Clash of the Titans and Alice in Wonderland were converted to 3D with the single purpose of SCREWING customers out of their money. The 3D conversions were done fast and cheap after the actual filming, and added nothing to the viewing experience, in fact it was annoying at times. Will this be avoided in the video game industry?

Myself, I feel that first-person shooter games could specifically be much improved with 3D. Have you ever noticed how there is no peripheral vision even though its from a first person view? Just a flat square of what you can see. Would added depth make for a more realistic and immersive experience? I think so. I still wonder how I would feel sitting in a room by myself with a controller in hand, headset on my ears, and a freaking pair of glasses on my face. Its annoying enough to take off the headset to run down stairs to grab a bowl of cereal between rounds of play, now I’m gonna have sun glasses on too.

Could a saturation of crappy 3D games ever occur if the price of entry isnt more expensive? For movies you simply convert it to 3D and just don’t tell your audience it was done poorly, then BAM, extra money. If games could stay at the already very high price, I think this may never be a concern because there is no way to make a simple cash-in off of the 3D.

I do worry that these games to be released in 3D will have more than one version. That’s where things get muddy. Will you buy the 2D edition for $60 and the 3D version for $70? Will the 3D version offer a 2D option? I don’t currenty have a 3D TV but I know I don’t want to buy the same game twice just so I can play on my new TV in 3D. I want it in 3D and 2D on one disc.

Sony, please don’t screw us on this one. Make a great game, make it the same price as current new games, and give us 2D in the same package.
