The Death Star

An Open Source Death Star funded Kickstarter campaign has popped up online. After the U.S Government recently denied a request to build a Death Star, a private organization has started the effort themselves. On their Kickstarter page they state, “We need to protect ourselves from threats far far away so lets build a death star.”

The campaign founder has an initial funding goal of $31,403,330 to create more detailed plans and enough chicken wire to protect reactor exhaust ports. Their need for more work is evidence in the picture below, which shows the extent of the design progress. Their Stretch Goal is $850,000,000,000,000,000 to secure full funding for actual construction.

Despite this note at the bottom of the Kickstarter Campaign page,
“The main challenge is assuring Kickstarter that this is a joke and not a serious project. As proof, the goal has been set high enough to make successful funding almost impossible.” They already 1058 backers and have raised $300,723.

Now that Disney hold the patents I’d say it’s going to be very hard to get the rights to build this technological terror. If you think it’s going to be hard to raise the funds necessary for the Death Star, you have no idea what it’s like to go to court against Disney.
