Filming begins in April for Wally Pfister’s directorial debut, Transcendence, with now confirmed star, Johnny Depp. Rumors of Depp’s involvement have been circulating since last fall and its now official. This will leave Depp enough time in his schedule to film Black Mass, scheduled to begin shooting this summer.
No official plot details have been given for the film, but reports indicate that Depp will play a scientist who manages to somehow upload his consciousness in to a computer. Rumor has it that Noomi Rapace, James McAvoy, Tobey Maguire, and Christoph Waltz are also being considered for various roles in the film, making it a potentially very big debut for Pfister.
Transcendence is being produced by Alcon Entertainment and Straight Up Films, with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas serving as executive producers. Christopher Nolan and Wally Pfister have been long time collaborators, dating back to Nolan’s first studio production, Memento. Pfister has served as the Director of Photography on all of Nolan’s subsequent films and won an Oscar for his work on Inception. Transcendence is slated for release in 2014.
