Here at Film Popper we gotta get our film and entertainment fix and we gotta get it quick. So I present to you the Film Popper 300 review for Iron Man 2, and as always in 300 words or less.
Iron Man 2
Iron Man 2 is potentially the biggest release this summer, and take it from me, it does not disappoint.
This time around Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is pitted against the US government, a rival weapons manufacturer and a new unexpected enemy. The action is great, dialogue is witty and humorous and Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow’s chemistry is as good or better than in the first.
Iron Man 2carries a slightly darker tone, as you often see in sequel, and focuses on the world of corporate and military politics, not letting either get in the way of the entertainment or becoming a message movie. Sam Rockwell plays Justin Hammer, a Stark Industries competitor, and he does great. If the rest of the movie were garbage it’s worth seeing for Rockwell’s performance alone, because he really shines. Don Cheadle replaces Terrance Howard as Rhodey. Cheadle’s portrayal lacks the charm of Howard’s performance and his relationship with Stark feels hollow in comparison. This could be due to a more serious role Rhodey takes in the film, it feels like a completely different character. Rourke, Jackson, and Scarlett do well enough.
Jon Favreau successfully avoids stupid relationship drama that plagues too many superhero movies and even with its darker feel it remains a blast to watch. This is what summer blockbusters are all about.
Iron Man 2 isn’t better or worse than the first, it’s just more of a good thing.
Oh, and be sure to stay after the credits. [Spoiler Hint]
