Filmpopper Review: ‘Going The Distance’

In the romantic comedy Going the Distance Erin (Drew Barrymore) meets a guy named Garrett (Justin Long) and they’re perfect for each other. But this is the movies, so of course there’s going to be a problem. The problem is that they live in different cities, and if they want to continue dating they’ll have to deal with all the difficulties that come with a long distance relationship.
The movie was okay, and had a few good laughs, but it felt like someone took a somewhat decent romantic comedy and decided at the last minute to add a lot of gross jokes and expletives in the hopes that guys would like it. Now, I know that guys tend to like toilet humor more than women, but is that really all it takes to get them to like what would otherwise be considered a very sappy movie? This isn’t something I say a lot, but maybe guys deserve more credit than this. Then again maybe they don’t. I really don’t know.
Like I said before the movie does have some pretty funny parts, and Barrymore and Long do a pretty good job at making the more predictable scenes somewhat entertaining. But the funniest scenes were those involving Erin’s sister (Christina Applegate) and brother-in-law (Jim Gaffigan). Why couldn’t the movie have been about those two?
Basically this was an okay movie, but don’t go if you are easily offended by any of the following: poop jokes, excessive crying, jokes about sexual acts, Drew Barrymore, or partial male nudity.
Can you take a guy to this? I would normally say yes, but I’m told that most guys hate Drew Barrymore, so it really just depends on if this applies to the guy in question.
Note: The editor is insisting I mention that this is the first fictional film by documentary director Nanette Burstein (American Teen). As if anyone really cares.
