Variety is reporting that Avatar broke both the Blu-ray and DVD first day sales records, handily beating out the prior Blu-ray sales king, The Dark Knight.
Avatar, which was released 0n Earth Day, beat the combined Blu-ray/DVD single day sales record of 2.7 million units previously held by The Dark Knight by a full half-million discs. More significant though is the Blu-ray sales more than doubled the The Dark Knight. Avatar brought in 1.5 million Blu-ray sales while The Dark Knight did only 600,000. Obviously there are for more HDTVs and Blu-ray players in homes now since The Dark Knight was released, but Avatar‘s stunning visual experience should drive people to buy the Blu-ray version.
James Cameron must be very pleased. After years of touting his 3D technology he now dominates the 2D world with the Blu-ray and DVD releases. And what about Avatar 3D Blu-ray? The Consumerist reports it will not be released in 3D until some time next year, presumably so that the movie can be optimized for the new 3D televisions and to have a bigger launch once there are more 3D sets in homes.

Avatar was terrible! I did not enjoy some hippy blue aliens freaking out on an oppressing larger force which OBVIOUSLY had to be played out by the Marines. Also, the United States Marine Corp does not use the tactics displayed in the movie. And alien sex is not hot, and why would I want to connect my braid to your anal cavity? And Blu-ray makes things look too plastic-y.
I did not think Avatar was terrible. But I did think it was very average and does not deserve any of the praise it has received.
I can give you that, it seemed like dances with wolves but with aliens and spinning lizards instead of feather indians.
