Andy Serkis – An Oscar for ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’?

It’s been going around for sometime, that Andy Serkis should get an Oscar for his amazing work in Rise of the Planet of the Apes. James Franso even wrote a personal appeal. My personal opinion has been that this is ridiculous. Serkis did the motion capture work which was later filled in by incredible computer graphic technology created by Weta Digital.
Serkis also portrayed Gollum in the Lord of the Rings films and Kong in Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong.
My argument against an Oscar has been that if the technology filled in after was just stick figures, would anyone think he deserved an Oscar? I think not. It’s all about the technology. And you simply can’t give an acting Oscar to someone who never appeared on screen.
Now, having said that, and after watching this behind-the-scenes video from Rise of the Planet of the Apes that features Andy Serkis playing Caesar, I find myself rethinking everything. From the clip, there’s no doubt that Serkis acted his ass off and you almost forget that it’s indeed a human playing the ape. I mean he’s really good!!! Watch for yourself. I’m now thinking that he should at least be nominated. And isn’t that the real honor anyways?
The Oscar nominations will be announced on January 24th at 8:38 AM (EST).
