For the second year in a row Ricky Gervais eviscerated Hollywood elites on their own turf at the 68th annual Golden Globe Awards. After Gervais lambasted Hollywood locals last year, I was sure he would not have been invited back, or at least the Hollywood Foreign Press would have asked him to tone it down this year. Well… he didn’t. And after a monologue that made heavy jabs at Charlie Sheen, the bland characters in The Tourist, Cher, the airbrushed gals from Sex and the City and Hugh Hefner’s wrinkled body parts, Gervaisended by saying “I Warned Them.” So anyway, except for Gervais’ colorful and probably unappreciated comedy, which I love, it was the usual boring awards show we’ve all gotten used to.
There were however a couple surprises, like Katy Segal taking Best Actress for Sons of Anarchy. And Paul Giamatti’s win for Barney’s Version, beating out Johnny Depp who was nominated for both Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist. But the biggest surprise was the lack of any awards going to Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Robbing Nolan of both Best Director and Best Picture and giving them to David Fincher was as bad as robbing the Oscars from Fincher for his superb Fight Club film back in in 1999. The Social Network was a solid film but in no way did it compare to Nolan’s mind bending original creation. Perhaps in the same way the Academy was not yet ready for Fight Club a decade ago, the Foreign Press did not yet understand the brilliance of this year’s Inception.
